The Comprehensive Guide to Hair-Oiling- Procedure & Benefits
For many of us, oiling our hair is associated with nostalgia. It brings back the good old
memories of “maa ka haath ki champi”.
Hair oiling is an age-old tradition in Ayurveda. It is pouring oil onto the hair, gently working it into the hair and scalp to hydrate, moisturize and nourish the scalp and hair.
Benefits of hair oiling.
Balances doshas
According to Ayurveda, there are 3 doshas or vital life energies that flow through our bodies-Vatta, Pitta and Kapha. An excess of these doshas upsets our body’s natural rhythm, and itsimpact can be observed on the health of our body and hair. Oiling the scalp stimulates the energy points or marmas on the scalp and helps balance the doshas. As a result, various hair problems, like hair fall, dandruff, premature greying and coarse hair, which are manifestations of dosha imbalance, could be solved.
Strengthens the hair : Apart from balancing doshas, hair-oiling nourishes and strengthens the hair. Stronger and robust hair means lesser hair fall. Oils rich in Bhringraj, Amla or Argan oil can do this trick! Moreover, regular hair oiling helps strengthen hair roots, increasing the tensile strength of hair preventing breakage.

Selection of right hair oil
The first and foremost step is the selection of the right hair oil. It is essential to read the ingredients label while selecting hair oil (and anything for that matter!). Many hair oils are produced and formulated in ways that may not help achieve any benefits associated with hair oiling. That processed mixture only results in more harm than good. While selecting hair oils, it is crucial to consider your hair type. As we already stated, the health of the hair is determined by the doshas in the body. People with high Pitta are prone to hair thinning and premature hair-greying. Coconut oil or Argan oil is the best bet for these people.
If Vatta is high, a person might have thin, frizzy and dry hair. These people need regular oiling, and sesame or almond oil works better for their hair. Those with high Kapha have thick, long, curly, oily hair and sesame or olive oil is the best bet for them.It is also suggested to choose chemical-free or cold pressed oils because these oils don’t damage the hair. In addition, many manufacturers offer a blend of various cold-pressed oils, which offers multiple benefits.
What is the right way of oiling your hair?
As much as it is essential to oil your hair regularly, it is also crucial to do it correctly, as who doesn’t want to reap maximum benefits from this simple hair care ritual.
- Start with combing your hair to remove any tangles and knots.
- Before applying the oil, warm the hair oil. Warm hair oil is absorbed better onto the scalp. Also, massaging with warm hair oil stimulates blood circulation, resulting in better distribution of nutrients to the hair follicles. This results in better hair growth and texture.
- Gently massage the oil into your scalp. To do that, divide the hair into smaller partitions and gently work your ways, starting from the scalp to the ends of the hair.
- If you want to pamper yourself further, you can wrap a damp and warm cloth around your hair. This step will help open up the pores on the scalp, allowing deeper penetration of oil onto the scalp.
- It is advisable to leave the oil overnight and then rinse it off with a mild shampoo the following day.
Common hair oiling mistakes
Avoid combing hair after oiling
We should avoid combing out hair after an oil massage. Our scalp becomes relaxed after oiling, and hair is more vulnerable and prone to breakage at that time. Oil also weighs down our hair, and combing our hair at that time to remove knots and tangles will only result in breakage and loss. If at all you wish to detangle your hair after oiling, do it gently with your hands. Start from the end and go upwards slowly till the scalp.
Don’t shampoo too soon
It is advisable to leave the oil overnight and rinse it off with a mild shampoo the following day. However, if that is not possible, then allow the hair oil to sit at least for an hour on your scalp before washing it off.
While washing your hair immediately after oiling is not a good idea, leaving hair oil for a longer time is best neither. Oil can form a coating on the scalp clogging the scalp pores, attracting dirt and other impurities. It may also lead to dandruff and an itchy scalp.
Avoid massaging too vigorously
A vigorous massage of oil on the scalp may lead to hair breakage. Hence it is always advisable to massage gently in a circular motion.
The Last Thought
Just like our skin, our hair is also subjected to pollutants, dirt, heat accompanied by the effects of a busy lifestyle and several chemicals. Hair oiling is the ancient, time-honoured Ayurvedic practice that deeply conditions, nourishes and strengthens the hair. It is, however, essential to select the right hair oil.
